Add a Grain Bin or Dryer Only After Mapping the Farm's Existing Electrical Service
A new grain bin or dryer quote often starts with equipment capacity. On a working farm, that order should flip. The dryer motor, bin fans, legs, and controls only work if the existing service can feed them without starving the shop, house, or livestock buildings already on the same yard. Map the electrical service before the purchase order goes out.

Read the service before you read the equipment quote
Photograph the meter, main disconnect, and panel directory. Note voltage, whether the yard has three-phase power, and which buildings share the same service. Write the nameplate data for motors you already run hard during harvest. Those details matter more than a sales-sheet horsepower number sitting alone in an email.
If the farm grew building by building, the directory may be incomplete. Label what you can before we arrive. Unknown circuits are fine. Guessed loads are not. A short list of confirmed motors and one photo of the main gear beats a long guess about capacity.
Separate dryer load, bin fans, and controls
A dryer is not one load. Burners, fans, unload systems, and control panels each ask something different from the feeder. Bin aeration fans may cycle for weeks after harvest while the dryer sits idle. Put each major motor on the map with distance from the service and any existing disconnect.
- Dryer motor and control package nameplates
- Bin fans and expected run hours after harvest
- Legs, pit conveyors, and unload augers that start with the dryer
- Shop welders or compressors that share the same feeder during harvest
- Future bins or a second dryer you already expect within a few seasons

Three-phase availability changes the plan
Some yards already have three-phase. Others are single-phase with long feeders to outbuildings. Motor starting current, soft starts, and utility requirements all change with that fact. Do not order a three-phase dryer package for a single-phase service and hope a converter appears later. Confirm what the utility and the existing gear can support first.
Properties near Grafton, Grand Forks, and Thief River Falls often mix older farm services with newer machine sheds. Bring photos from every building that will share the harvest week load, not only the bin site.
Plan disconnects, grounding, and the trench route early
The electrical plan is not finished when the panel has open spaces. Disconnect location, grounding, feeder path, and future expansion space should be on the same sketch as the bin pad. Digging twice because the trench missed a future bin costs more than drawing the second pad now.
If standby power is part of harvest risk planning, talk through generators with our generator services team while the feeder map is open. Adding backup after concrete and gas lines are set is harder than naming critical grain loads during the first design pass.
Keep future expansion visible in the paperwork
Many farms buy one dryer now and expect another bin next year. Say that out loud. Feeder size, panel space, and trench depth should reflect the second piece of equipment if it is already likely. A clean closeout should list what was installed, what capacity remains, and what would trigger the next service upgrade.

Harvest week is the stress test
Design for the week everything runs: dryer, legs, bin fans, shop compressor, and house loads if they share capacity. A service that looks fine on a light midweek day can sag when harvest stacks motors. Ask which loads truly overlap and which can be sequenced. That conversation belongs in the estimate, not after the dryer is already on the pad.

What to send before the estimate
Send meter and panel photos, motor nameplates, a rough site sketch with building distances, harvest equipment you intend to run at the same time, and any utility letters you already have. Mention industrial or commercial buildings on the same property if they share feeders with the farm yard.
