Wire the Farm Shop for the Equipment You Plan to Use, Not the Empty Building
An empty machine shed can make electrical planning look easy.
There are four walls, a ceiling, a few large doors, and plenty of open space. Put up some lights, add outlets around the perimeter, install a panel, and the building is ready.
Then the equipment moves in.
A welder lands on one wall. A compressor takes another corner. Tools and chargers collect around a workbench. A heater is added. Larger machinery needs power. Suddenly several of the outlets are in the wrong places, the lighting is poor exactly where work happens, and the electrical service that looked generous when the building was empty no longer feels that way.

Put the workbench on the plan before the receptacles
The best outlet location depends on what will be plugged into it.
A general receptacle every few feet may be useful, but a serious farm shop usually has areas with specific jobs.
- Where will welding happen?
- Where is the compressor?
- Where are batteries charged?
- Will there be a large fixed tool?
- Where will vehicles or machinery be pulled inside for service?
- Does the building have a wash area?

Those circuits should be planned around the actual work locations.
This also helps prevent the familiar farm-shop problem where extension cords become permanent infrastructure because the equipment ended up thirty feet from the nearest useful outlet.
A rough equipment layout does not have to be an architectural drawing. Even marking major work areas on the floor plan can give the electrician a much better picture of how the building will operate.
Three-phase power should be discussed before equipment is purchased

That matters because some larger farm and shop equipment can have electrical requirements that are very different from ordinary household tools.
If the operation is considering new machinery, share the equipment specifications before the electrical project is finalized.
The electrician needs more than the equipment's physical size.
Voltage, phase, motor loads, starting requirements, and where the machine will sit can all affect how power reaches it.

That experience is relevant when a farm shop is expected to do more than provide a few lights and receptacles.
The building may eventually support equipment that has not been purchased yet. Nobody needs to overbuild the entire service around imaginary future machinery, but it is worth discussing the most realistic additions before everything is finished.
Lighting should follow the work, not only the ceiling grid
A shop can have plenty of light and still have poor lighting.
The issue is often where the light lands.
A row of fixtures may produce an even-looking ceiling while a raised hood, tall machine, shelving, or vehicle creates shadows exactly where someone is trying to work.

For the interior shop, think about tasks.
Workbenches need light on the work surface.
Areas used to inspect equipment need enough light around the machine rather than only above the center aisle.
Storage sections may need less.
Exterior lighting has its own job around doors, work areas, and the routes used after dark.
A lighting plan built around activity is usually more useful than simply filling the ceiling with identical fixtures.
Heat and electrical planning should happen together

That makes heating another decision to bring into the electrical conversation early.
A building used occasionally in mild weather has one need.
A shop where people work through a North Dakota winter has another.
The electrical contractor needs to know what equipment will be installed, where it will sit, and what power it requires.
The same applies to ventilation and other fixed systems.
Each addition consumes capacity and competes for wall or ceiling space.
Planning those systems together is much easier than adding one major load at a time after the shop is already full of tools and equipment.
Agricultural buildings live in a harder environment than a finished garage

That is another reason farm-shop wiring should not be treated exactly like a clean residential garage.
The building may have large doors open during work, equipment moving through it, dust in the air, and significant temperature changes over the year.
The electrical installation has to match that environment and the equipment being used within it.
